Christian Charles Phillip Bale was born into a family of artists. His father was a talented entrepreneur and his mother a circus performer and dancer. Bale showed an early interest in acting and began his career at the tender age of ten with a role in a commercial.
He is known for his physical and emotional commitment to his characters.
Breakthrough:
His breakthrough came in 1987 with his role in the film "Empire of the Sun", in which he played a boy imprisoned in a Japanese internment camp during the Second World War. This role brought him much recognition and established him as an aspiring actor.
Development:
In the following years, Bale worked steadily on his career and appeared in films such as "American Psycho" (2000), "The Machinist" (2004) and "The Prestige" (2006). For his portrayal of Trevor Reznik in "The Machinist", he drastically lost weight to portray the character's physical condition. This extreme physical change showed his commitment to his roles.
