Born in: San Francisco | California
Nationality: USA
Height: 185 cm

Miscellaneous:
Eric William Dane was considered a charismatic yet down-to-earth personality. Despite his image as an attractive television star, he spoke openly about personal challenges. He publicly revealed that he struggled with depression and underwent treatment at times. A publicly known stay in rehab also showed that his life was not free of crises. Nevertheless, he repeatedly emphasised the importance of his family and his work as stabilising factors in his life.
During his school days at Sequoia High School in California, Dane discovered his passion for acting rather by chance. Originally, he was very interested in sports, especially water polo. It was only through participating in a school play that he developed a taste for the stage. After graduating from school, he decided to pursue acting seriously and moved to Los Angeles to further his career. He did not complete a classical acting training at a renowned academy; instead, he gained practical experience through auditions and smaller roles.
In April 2025, Dane announced that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He passed away on 19 February 2026 at the age of 53.
Breakthrough:
Eric Dane first gained widespread recognition through television appearances in series such as Charmed. However, his breakthrough came in 2006 with the role of Dr. Mark ‘McSteamy’ Sloan in the successful hospital series Grey's Anatomy. The character quickly became a favourite with audiences and made him internationally famous. His confident demeanour and complex portrayal of the character earned him considerable media attention.
Development:
After leaving Grey's Anatomy, Dane sought to broaden his range of roles. He took on leading roles in series such as The Last Ship, in which he played a naval officer for several years. He also appeared in various film productions, demonstrating a wider range that went beyond the image of the charming doctor. He later appeared in the HBO series Euphoria, where he played a much darker father figure and once again received a lot of attention.
Accolades:
4 awards & 6 nominations
Although Eric Dane was never one of Hollywood's most award-winning actors, he was recognised in ensemble nominations, particularly for his work on Grey's Anatomy. The series itself received numerous awards and nominations, including at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Even though he did not win any major individual film awards, Dane was still considered an integral part of successful television productions and a favourite with audiences in many series formats.
Dubbing voice:
In German-speaking countries, Eric Dane was often dubbed by David Nathan. Nathan is one of the most famous German dubbing actors and has also lent his voice to Hollywood stars such as Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. With his distinctive, deep voice, he played a key role in giving Dane's characters a distinctive and recognisable aura in German as well.
