Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson grew up in a family with strong ties to the film industry. His father was a well-known American actor, while his mother was an Irish actress. After graduating from high school, Gibson moved to Australia, where he studied acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA).
