Miscellaneous:
Even at a young age, Patrick Galen Dempsey showed an unusual interest: he started juggling early on, learned to ride a unicycle and toyed with the idea of a career as a clown: he wanted to ‘be the centre of attention’ and dreamed of the circus ring. At the age of 13, he performed his own juggling show and eventually found his way to the theatre via the stage: he worked with the Maine Acting Company, among others, and had engagements in New York. There he gained his first acting experience.

Despite his early success, his path was not always easy: he was diagnosed with dyslexia and had to regularly memorise texts for his roles. This has shaped him to this day, but at the same time, his unique career has given him character and depth.

Breakthrough:
Dempsey made his debut on the big screen in the late 1980s: films such as Can't Buy Me Love (1987) and Loverboy (1989) made him a heartthrob for teenagers. Nevertheless, it was his move to television and later his entry into a completely different series format that really made him famous: since 2005, he has played neurosurgeon Dr Derek Shepherd in the hit series Grey's Anatomy. This role brought Dempsey international fame and popularity.

Development:
Dempsey remained connected to cinema and took on leading and supporting roles in various genres – romantic comedies, dramas, action films. For example, he appeared in Sweet Home Alabama (2002), Enchanted (2007), Made of Honor (2008), Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) and, in later years, Bridget Jones's Baby (2016) and The Art of Racing in the Rain (2019).

His versatility was evident in his ability to give convincing performances in romantic comedies as well as in more serious drama and action films. At the same time, he remained true to his original passion – motor racing – and built up a serious profile in this field.

Accolades:
8 awards & 23 nominations

Throughout his career, Dempsey has received several awards and nominations: In 1988, he won the Young Artist Award for Best Young Actor for Can't Buy Me Love. He has received multiple awards for his role in Grey's Anatomy: He received the People's Choice Award for Favourite TV Actor (2007) and Favourite Dramatic TV Actor (2015). He was also nominated for two Golden Globe Awards (2006, 2007) and an Emmy Award for a guest appearance in a series.
