Lisa Valerie Kudrow originally pursued a scientific career path: she attended Vassar College in New York and graduated with a degree in biology in 1985. After graduating, she worked for several years as a medical assistant for her father, but her early passion for acting and comedy never left her. Comedian Jon Lovitz encouraged her to join an improvisational comedy group: she began training with the improv theatre group The Groundlings in Los Angeles and became a permanent member in 1989.
She has been married to French-born advertising executive Michel Stern since 1995, and they have one son together.
Breakthrough:
Her big breakthrough came in 1994 when she took on the role of the lively masseuse and singer-songwriter Phoebe Buffay in the US sitcom Friends. This role quickly became cult: Phoebe, with her eccentric songs such as ‘Smelly Cat’, her unconventional nature and her endearing quirks, made her known to millions of viewers worldwide.
Development:
After Friends ended in 2004, Lisa Kudrow remained loyal to the acting and entertainment industry, but with a different focus. She took on the lead role of Valerie Cherish in the mockumentary series The Comeback (2005, 2014), which she also co-developed, co-wrote and produced. She also played the manipulative therapist Fiona Wallice in the comedy series Web Therapy (originally a web series from 2008, TV from 2011). This was a project in which she once again combined her love of comedy with creative initiative. Over the years, she has appeared in various film and television productions, but has remained true to her strength in portraying quirky and strong-willed characters.
